United States: For the people who have the history of smoking, should be getting a yearly or can say a monthly CT check-up which could really help us find lung cancer treatment when it’s easier to treat. Unfortunately, a new check shows that utmost Americans do not know about this important webbing.
Survey Reveals Lack of Awareness
As reported by HealthDay, the American Lung Association actually conducted the 2024 Lung Health Barometer survey and found out here that many people are not aware of the benefits of CT scans for lung cancer. Only 38% of those surveyed knew that CT scans are available for people at high risk for lung cancer.
Why Screening Matters
Early detection through a CT scan can increase the chances of surviving lung cancer by 63%, according to the ALA. The American Cancer Society advises yearly screening with a low-dose CT scan for people aged almost 50 to 80 years smoke or used to smoke at a time, with at least a 20 pack-year smoking history (a pack a day for 20 years).
Survey Findings and Concerns
The ALA survey, which includes almost 4,000 people across the U.S.
- Here are only 28 percent of the respondents knew that lung cancer is the one of the major causes of cancer deaths in America.
- Just 10 percent of them realised that lung cancer often affects women.
- And about 73% of people had not discussed their lung cancer risk with their doctor, but here you shouldn’t hide anything from your doctor and your advocate.
- Only 42% were concerned about getting lung cancer.
Despite these gaps in knowledge, awareness of lung cancer screening has improved. The survey showed a 27% increase in awareness compared to 2022.
Improved Treatments and Survival Rates
Numerous people 70 percent are hopeful that treatments for lung cancer have bettered, but only 15 know that survival rates have increased by over 50 in the once decade.
